Happy New Year, Warren! It’s now the second week of January and it finally feels like winter with all this snow and cold weather. It’s a perfect time to go indoors and check out some high school sports like basketball, hockey, swimming, and wrestling!
Warren boys’ and girls’ basketball is in full swing. League play started last week, and teams have begun to sperate themselves from being pretenders to contenders. It’s a long way until March, but there are standout teams in Warren right now that look like they can do some damage in the playoffs.
In the Catholic League, the De La Salle Pilots are off to a hot start, going 7-0. The team started league play on January 11 vs. Orchard Lake Saint Mary’s, who is also undefeated at 6-0.
Now to switch gears, the De La Salle hockey team is off to a great start, going 11-2. They are in first place in their division (Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League), going 5-1. They have a couple of games this week against Bloomfield Hills (1/12) and Grosse Pointe South (1/13).
Now let’s take a look at some of the schools around the MAC, starting with the boys. The Fitzgerald Spartans and the Warren Woods Tower Titans are tied for first place in the Gold Division. Fitzgerald is playing some really good basketball up against some tough opponents, falling to River Rouge by two points as they are perfect on the season. The Spartans also had a good loss to U of D Jesuit, falling by eight, but they are showing they can hang in with some of the better schools in different conferences.
In the Silver Division, the Lincoln Abes are currently tied for first place at 4-2, while in the Bronze Division, the Center Line Panthers are tied with Madison for first place. It’s still too early to see who will come out first, but this is shaping up to be an exciting year for boys’ basketball. I can’t wait until March comes around!
With girls’ basketball, we currently don’t have any teams in first place, but there are a couple of teams that are just a game or two back from the top spot. In the Silver Division, the Center Line Panthers are sitting in second place at 4-2. The Cousino Patriots are also in second place in the blue division at 4-4. It’s a long season and anything can happen from now until March. Teams can get hot and cold or even go on runs. Basketball is a crazy game.
Wrestling is also underway during the winter season. Currently, the Warren Mott Marauders are sitting in first place in the white division. At their last meet on January 5, they tied the De La Salle Pilots 42-42. Their next meet is on January 13 at Lamphere.
