Warren residents are encouraged to put on their walking shoes in support of victims of domestic violence. As a kick-off to Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Turning Point will host the 11th annual Tara’s Walk on Saturday, September 22, at 9 a.m. at Freedom Hill Amphitheater in Sterling Heights.
The walk honors Tara Grant, a 34-year-old domestic violence victim who was slain by her husband in their Washington Township home in 2007. Tara’s husband, Stephen Grant, was convicted in her death and is serving a 50-year prison sentence. Proceeds from the walk go to the Tara Liberation Fund, providing emergency cash assistance for survivors fleeing a domestic violence situation. Turning Point is a vital part of the safety net in Metro Detroit, providing support and prevention services for domestic and sexual violence survivors.
Discounted advance registration fees are available at www.turningpointmacomb.org. Walkers/runners can also register on site, beginning at 9 a.m. Adult fees are $25 per person, or $20 per person for teams of six or more. Teams receive a sign with custom messaging.
